My Story.
I’m Carol Richards, founder of RAI by Design.
I’m not a technologist or a lawyer - I am an educator and an implementor. - and that’s my advantage.
I focus on the human‑centric behaviours that make change real and sustainable.
I bring a calm, structured, commercial lens to messy, ambiguous problems.
I began my career in small and mid‑size software companies where progress depended on moving quickly — trying things, breaking things, and learning what growth demanded next. Later, in global roles at HP and Microsoft, I learned a different discipline: clarity, people, and execution are what keep teams aligned at scale. Those experiences weren’t opposites; they were complementary. The agility of my early career and the structure of my global roles taught me how to meet teams where they are and help them grow with confidence.
During my time at Microsoft, I had the privilege of adopting and training teams on Responsible AI standards — working inside one of the world’s leading organisations shaping the future of trustworthy, safe, and ethical AI. I saw first hand how powerful responsible practices can be when they’re embedded early, not bolted on later. From the first conversation to final delivery, Responsible AI shaped how our teams designed solutions for some of the world’s biggest organisations. I led change as the company entered new markets and evolved its strategy, helping sales teams build the skills and confidence to execute with clarity. Technology matters — but without the ability to scale commercially, the opportunity is never fully realised.
I’ve shared this quote with teams who felt “too busy” to change and overwhelmed by how anything new could possibly work. Helping them find the confidence to stop what no longer serves them, start what matters, and continue the right things is where leadership really begins.
“Don’t confuse the flapping of wings with forward motion.”
The credit goes to a former boss — an exceptional leader who taught me that clarity and focus are real superpowers. Being busy doesn’t mean you’re moving in the right direction.
I understand why planning, structure, and governance can feel restrictive. Start‑ups and fast‑moving teams don’t want a parachute opening behind them. But lightweight, practical frameworks adopted early — while teams are small — give AI builders a genuine competitive edge. They help founders build responsible behaviours, decision‑making, and skills from day one. They enable teams to innovate with integrity, move forward with confidence, and scale without chaos. Reverse‑engineering these foundations later is harder, slower, and far more expensive.
My goal is simple.
I help teams scale with clarity, confidence, and integrity — by design.
